R009 - THE MEMORY: LET'S PAUSE FOR A MOMENT AND LISTEN TO THOSE WHO SUFFER.

During this period, various initiatives have arisen to commemorate events that are distant

but close in memory (Armenian, the foibe, the Holocaust and many others), events that

Italians rightly remember in order to avoid their repetition with future generations.

Thanks to freedom of thought and our democracy, our children have grown up open to knowing the meaning of the customs and traditions handed down over the centuries by the elders; they have acquired a rich identity that derives from the knowledge of their history without being caged.

The message I’m sending is to draw attention to the condition of the people living on the southern shore of the Mediterranean, our neighbors subjected in the 21st century to discriminatory laws not very different from those which were practiced in Italy under Fascism. These conditions push part of the Arab population to emigrate, leading to the extinction of some components that have contributed to the wealth and splendour of the Arab civilization, the same that today causes their marginalization and flight abroad: moderate Muslims, Jews, and Christians.

Sober truths:

As a regular reader I appreciate the quality of our Weekly and freedom of expression allowed to readers. I take that opportunity to reply to Edward Said article published january end.
It is true that in Israel non-jews , muslims and christians, do not enjoy the same privileges and citizens’ rights as jews, the law considering them as second class citizens. Your diagnosis would have been transparent should it gave a full-round information about discrimination in Israel as well as in the newly formed Palestine and other neighbour countries.
Discrimination is one of the major reasons causing the emigration of arab christians out of that territory , their homeland, and generally speaking from the whole Mashreq. Arab christians have been settled in this region since ever, do not deserve to be treated as second class citizens whether it be under the jewish law or under the sharia, the islamic law prevailing in most arab countries including, perhaps, Palestine. One major difference exists though: freedom of expression as you state is allowed in Israel allowing Prof. Israel Shabak to dissent and to publicize his dissent to the aplication of the jewish law, halasha.
Would my opinion be permitted to be published in Egypt?

Subject: If Islam is at school – Monday, 31 August 1998

The approaching of the celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights approved by the United Nations on December 10, 1948 allows me to expose some thoughts. The first one is that the Universal Islamic Declaration of Human Rights issued by the Islamic Council of Europe at the headquarters of UNESCO September 11, 1981 19 is in stark contrast to that of the U.N. … This explains some behaviours and proclamations by Islamic centres established in Europe.

It is well known that Islamic law (Sharia) includes different customs and traditions from those of the Western world and it might seem normal that Islamic leaders want to import into Europe. However, the laws of the Arab world are not the same in all countries: with the exception of Saudi Arabia and Sudan, the Arab countries apply the Sharia only for the part concerning the family and succession, that is, the personal status, and not all in the same way.
